Full Transcript of Southgate First conference as England manager

Days ago, the English FA announced caretaker, Gareth Southgate as the manager of the Three Lions on permanent basis.

The former U21 manager of England was unveiled at Wembley on Monday.

Here's what he said on his appointment.

'On Wayne Rooney': "Wayne is England captain ... but what's also clear is I've only selected him to start in two of the four matches we've had. Obviously it's not the case that Wayne expects to play every game."

'On redefining the team's off-the-field culture' : "If we think we're good enough to play the best teams in the world and give ourselves a slight handicap along the way, then good luck with that. Young people make decisions and I made plenty of poor decisions when I was a young player. It's how you react and learn from those moments that's important."

'On the fine print of his four-year deal' :"There's no break clause. We've got a group of players I think are going to develop a lot and it's important to look not just at short-term results."

'On the scope of his job' : "I think every coach is a psychologist, it's a fundamental part of what you do. You're helping people perform to their best and there's got to be a psychological element to that."

'On his new profile': "I'm in a position where the comments I make, the opinions I have, are going to be reported a lot more widely. That's something I'm comfortable with."

'On Marcus Rashford and the under-21 Euros next summer': "There's no question in my mind Marcus would definitely benefit from tournament football but I'm also conscious of his age and physical load over the course of the season."

'On England as the 'impossible job' :"I don't think any job is impossible. Some jobs are more difficult than others, more complex, and this is definitely one of those. I'm ready to embrace that."

'On right-hand man Steve Holland': "I think everyone knows how important Steve has been for me in terms of the work we've done in the last few years (at under-21 level) and in the last few weeks, there's no secret in that."

'On what fans can expect': "I'd like an England team that excites the public, that supporters look forward to watching and are ultimately proud of."
